Back to the Grind

After arriving back in Beijing, filling up on western food supplies at the Carrefour Supermarket and heading back to Tonghua by train I am facing the beginning of the new work year.

There is a saying that goes like this: “Work is the scourge of the middle class”. Well that is how I felt going back to Tonghua. Holidays over, back in the cold, tons of work to catch up on, planning for the next year’s production, meetings, etc.

A bit depressed but will quickly get over it once I am back in the swing of things. There are lots of things to look forward to and the company has a very focused agenda. There was the annual general company meeting which was a giant pep talk to the staff which kicked off the year to a good start.

Finally my role here at the company is sorted. I am now officially the head winemaker in charge of all bulk wines, fermentation, stability of all wines, in charge of all dessert wines, new product development, implement new foreign wine technology and standards into the production programs and the general improvement of existing wines. This is no small feat as we have about 20 million liters of wine to deal with and so much bad wine made in the past that I have to find a way to fix and use up. My work is certainly cut out for me.

Anyway, back to the grind it is…
